Q: Can a parent, guardian or mentor attend Orientation in place of the student?
A: No. It is important that students learn first-hand the academic requirements, as well as meet new students, staff and faculty before they arrive for the start of the semester in August. We do offer a Parent and Guest orientation for those that would like to learn about Sonoma State and what the student's first year will netail. For more information, please visit our Parent & Guest Orientation page.
Q: Can I take my student out of orientation early?
A: No. Your student is required to stay through the evening sessions of orientation as well as the closing ceremony on the second day.
Q: What can students do before orientation, and what information can we send ahead of time or bring with us to orientation?
A: The easiest way to keep track of a student's tasks throughout the summer is to assist your student in following her/his "To Do" list. They can find all requirements listed on their MySSU page.
Q: Who can my student call if we have other questions?
A: The friendly and knowledgeable Orientation staff is ready to answer your questions. Call 707-664-4464 Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org. During our peak times (February - July) we receive many phone calls and voicemails. We recommend e-mail before phone calls, and if you do decide to call, please leave only one voicemail, as we try to get back to you within 48 hours and multiple messages causes delay.
Q: Does the fee that I pay for Guest Orientation cover my overnight lodging?
A: No. Because Guest Orientation is not required, your fee does NOT cover overnight accommodations. Your fee covers room space, meals, receptions, and staffing of your program. We will have discounted rates available at nearby hotels once. Please check back for further information in the future.
Q: Can I stay on campus while my student is in orientation?
A: No, unfortunately Sonoma State University does not offer overnight accommodations for parents during the orientation sessions. There are several local hotels in the area that are a great choice. We also have a hotel that has a discounted rate arranged.
